Chile – Recommended Social Media Accounts

At Expat Focus, we like to be on the lookout for resources around the web that could help prospective expats adjust to their new countries. Today, we’re taking a look at Chile and some of the social media accounts that might be useful for expats there.Emily In Chile – Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/emilyinchile

Emily had one request when she arrived in Chile: “Don’t call me gringa”. Half-Brit, half-American, she first came to Santiago on a study abroad program, thinking she would spend her months drinking wine, talking about Pinochet and wandering in South America. Instead, she gave her heart to a chileno. After some back-and-forth to the USA, thanks to successive internships in Chile, she finally moved to the country two years later. There she started talking about her expat life, the wonders of the country, and her travels in her blog. A must if you like beautiful landscapes, nice tips to visit the countryside, and food.

Chachando Chile – Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/Cachando-Chile-218514220831/

Elena Labrin is an engineer, born and raised in Peru. She defines her blog, Cachando Chile, as a three in one. Firstly, a travel blog; secondly, an expat blog; and thirdly, a celebration of Chilean culture and what it is to live in the country “at the end of the map”. On the Facebook page, you will find recipes, places to explore and discover, top 10 must-sees in Chile, information about artists there, chileno entrepreneurships, gotta-try foods… all sorts of things to keep you updated about Chilean life when you arrive from anywhere else in the world.

Santiago Tourist – Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/SantiagoTourist

Santiago Tourist has come out of an experience of students far away from home, in Chile, willing to share their experiences at the very bottom of America. It has now become a very useful tool to discover the region – and not only Santiago. Although it was born in Chile, it is now also about other places in South America, for expats who want to travel around as well. Daily life, personal experiences exploring the country, restaurant reviews, stories of some remarkable places… Everything is gathered to help you better understand the long, thin country, and stop being a tourist in Santiago!

Sally Rose – Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/Thethornyrose

Sally Rose is both a writer and a teacher, but also calls herself a “learner”. She traveled a lot in America, from Louisiana to New York, crossing New Mexico, before she landed in Santiago in 2009. There, she did exactly what she has been doing since she was a preteen: keeping a diary of the events happening in her life. This is how “A Million Sticky Kisses”, her first book, was born: out of several notes about her chileno stay in 2009 and 2010. She offers a very personal and touching selection of anecdotes of her life in Chile through her Facebook account.

Inside Santiago – Facebook

Three friends from three different countries spent a few months struggling to adapt to chileno life at their arrival… and decided to create a place where expats can find all the information they needed to know. They answer the most critical questions but also the simplest, giving the best keys to discovering the city, experiencing it, and facilitating the integration of their peers. Some really good tips about cultural behaviour are provided here, from city guides to how to ski in Chile, chileno slang and romantic getaways… or how to cry in Chile – a perfectly acceptable thing to do according to the local culture!

Leah Gringa Journeys – Instagram

For those who want a glance of the wonders Chile has to offer, Gringa Journeys is the perfect option. Leah is a twenty-something woman from Atlanta, working as a English-Spanish translator, who moved to Chile to chase the life she had always dreamed of. The very well-sourced Instagram she runs is very often updated and includes links to articles on her blog. She asks us to travel with her, follow her city guides, her tips on how to sound like “a real Spanish speaker”, and also artistic content, such as her colorful articles and pictures of street art in Santiago.
