When sending a letter within Hong Kong, there are no postal codes. The address should include the addressee’s name, flat and/or floor numbers, name of building, number of building and name of street, name of village or district in capital letters, and whether or not the addressee is in New Territories, Hong Kong, or Kowloon. This last part should also be in capital letters.

When you send a letter outside of Hong Kong, you must remember to write the name of the country that it is going to. Anything that is sent abroad by post must be declared to Customs on special forms which are available at the post offices. You can also download these forms online as well.

Mail that is sent within Hong Kong has a charge of HK$1.40. Packages within Hong Kong will cost you HK$27 for the first kilo and HK$10 for each additional kilo. The maximum weight is 20 kilos. International postage is configured by zones. Taiwan and Singapore, for instance, are in zone 1 while Europe and the United States are in Zone 2. Surface mail is a cheaper way of sending mail internationally, but it is also the slowest route. Airmail is faster but more expensive.

Mail service in Hong Kong is considered fast and efficient. Because it is a small area, it is generally delivered quickly. There are also courier companies in addition to the national postal service. The two most popular, and internationally known, are FedEx and UPS.

Most of the post offices in Hong Kong offer additional services besides mail services. There are some Hong Kong government departments and local utility providers which permit customers to make selected payments via the post office. By using a postal remittance, you can even send money to such countries as Nepal, Indonesia, Mainland China, Japan, and the Philippines. Western Union services are available to send money to the rest of the world.

Post offices are normally open Monday to Saturday, though some of the larger branches may be open for business on Sundays and some public holidays, too. Business hours are usually 8 am-6pm. Not every post office location is equipped to handle all services. For instance, not all of them have PO box rentals. The larger branches do, however.

You do not have to find a mailbox in order to mail a letter. If it already has postage on it, you can drop it into a bright green letter box. If it does not have postage, and you know the correct amount, you can also purchase postage from label vending machines. Mobile Post Offices are available as well. These are small vans that visit locations throughout Hong Kong for about half an hour once a week, Monday through Friday.
