A blog that ranges across a wide variety of topics useful to new expats, The Erlangen Expat discusses life in Bavaria. The various sections accessible from the main menu at the top of the site will provide useful insights into different areas of expat life: ‘Learning German’ takes you through the different ways of learning the language, from short courses to language schools to smartphone apps.The ‘Events’ section is well worth a look if you’re searching for ways to immerse yourself in local culture, and the ‘Where To Buy’ section details which shops sell different items from around the world, as well as a few tips on German shopping etiquette.
Life In German
Diana moved from Mexico to Germany with her partner and baby girl. The blog explores all aspects of living in Germany, and as the family travel around to different parts of the country it is a must-read for potential expats who haven’t yet decided where to move to. All the posts are illustrated with photographs from Diana’s day-to-day life, which gives a good idea of what life there is actually like and provides a personal touch. As well as the journaling aspect, there are tips about the German culture and how to get by as an expat – take a look at the ‘W is for Work’ post for an insight into the German business world.
Welcome to Germerica
A fun blog written by American expat Courtney, Welcome to Germerica will make you smile and provide useful information about moving to Germany all at the same time. With posts about the cost of flying, German public healthcare, recreating recipes from home and studying in Germany, there are tips to suit every expat and the articles are written in a cheerful, accessible way that will make you feel like you’re talking to a friend. Check out the ‘Mistranslation Monday’ posts for a hilarious look at how different phrases can get lost in translation!
Living in Frankfurt
Providing a mixture of personal entries and cultural recommendations, Living in Frankfurt discusses how to get the most out of the city and how to blend in with the locals. From Irish pubs to history museums and art exhibitions, there is something for all tastes, as well as a useful guide to some of the regular attractions such as weekly farmers’ markets. There is also a series of articles about managing finances, including how to find an English-speaking tax advisor and the kind of salary an expat can expect when moving to Germany.
