Fady Magdy

Who are you?

My name is Fady Magdy, I am an Egyptian civil engineer, I’m 37 years old.

Where, when and why did you move abroad?

I have decided to travel and move abroad since I was 24 years old: at that time I was so excited to explore the world around me.I was lucky to get a job offer in KSA as a civil engineer and after 2.5 years of working hard I decided again to take another step and move to other country as I got a chance to move to Qatar with a good opportunity. After 10 years I felt that it’s time again to take most important step towards my future as I had been selected to emigrate to the most wonderful place in the world: New Zealand.

What challenges did you face during the move?

When I first moved, I had many worries about my engineering skills and being familiar with the new culture. For the second move I was a bit more confident about my communication skills but was feeling worried about my family as I was newly married at that time.

Finally I was more and more relaxed and comfortable about my third move to New Zealand, as I have passed all the hard times earlier.

It is not easy to get comfortable at first when moving to new country, but over time I adapted. I believe that being patient is the magic way to solve all your troubles.

Are there many other expats in your area?

Yes. I have a good company of friends from different places. All are so friendly and kind to me.

What is your relationship like with the locals?

So far I don’t have a big network. But I’m really willing to expand my relationships, I just need some time to get to know what people like or dislike so I can easily build up my friendships.

What do you like about life where you are?

Freedom and having a smiley face are the most amazing things in New Zealand.

What do you dislike about your expat life?

Missing my family and old friends.

What is the biggest cultural difference you have experienced between your new country and life back home?

Language and slang is the most difficult experience.

What do you think of the food and drink in your new country? What are your particular likes or dislikes?

There is no big difference between food in my country and here.

What advice would you give to anyone following in your footsteps?

Go ahead, don’t worry about the change, people here are supporting each other and kind to others.

What are your plans for the future?

Relax and relax and finally relax.
