Types of Residency in Portugal

Portugal is a popular destination for expats, known for its sunny weather, beautiful beaches, and rich cultural heritage. If you are considering moving to Portugal, one of the first things you will need to think about is obtaining residency status. There are several different types of residency available, each with its own requirements and limitations.

Types of Residency

1. Schengen Visa

If you are a citizen of a non-European Union (EU) country, you will need to obtain a Schengen visa to visit Portugal. This is a short-term visa that allows you to stay in Portugal and other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.

2. Temporary Residence Permit

A Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) allows you to stay in Portugal for a period of up to two years, and can be renewed. To be eligible for a TRP, you will need to meet certain requirements, such as having a job offer, being a student, or having a family member in Portugal.

4. Non-Habitual Resident Regime (NHR)

The Non-Habitual Resident Regime (NHR) is a tax incentive program for individuals who become tax residents in Portugal. Under the NHR, you may be eligible for a flat income tax rate of 20% on certain types of income, such as pensions and foreign income. To be eligible for the NHR, you must not have been a tax resident in Portugal in the previous five years.

5. Permanent Residence Permit

A Permanent Residence Permit (PRP) allows you to stay in Portugal indefinitely. To be eligible for a PRP, you will need to have lived in Portugal on a TRP for at least five years, or be a spouse or child of a Portuguese citizen or PRP holder.
