News Round-Ups, Staying Safe In Your New Home, And Running A Business Abroad

Sometimes a destination just calls out to you. Perhaps you’ve seen pictures of its beautiful scenery and think you’d feel at home there. Perhaps you’ve tried some of the cuisine and can’t get enough. Or maybe you’ve been there on holiday but want a more long-term plan.

Whatever your reasons for moving abroad, you’ll have some research to do before you arrive. One of the most important aspects is safety: being unfamiliar with your surroundings can make you more vulnerable, especially if your new home has a higher crime rate or more treacherous climate than you’re used to.Two of our articles this week focus on safety: the first talks about whether it’s safe for expats to move to Venezuela, a beautiful country with a high crime rate and a lot of political instability.

The second talks about precautions you may need to take if you’re moving to a tornado zone in the US. The most important one, of course, is not to copy the tornado chasers you see on TV! But there are other things you should keep in mind too – hopefully our article will help you prepare.

Safety might not be your top priority if you’re moving to the rurals of Bulgaria, but if you want to buy a little house and do it up, it’s worth keeping these points in mind.

In this month’s column, Chuck Bolotin argues that starting a company abroad may be the best business decision you could make.
