After a thorough 4-6 weeks trialling 5 South American cities each - Florianopolis, Salvador de Bahia, Lima, Medellin and Bogota - this Venezuelan and Dutch couple settled on the exotic climes of Lima for their new abode. Sharing their experiences, tips and findings via the medium of their blog, they are settling into life as expats. This is excellent reading for anyone thinking to move to these cities - and for keeping up to date with ongoing mischief.

Peru Or Bust

Eddie and Andrea are a couple of easy-going Peace Corp members that moved to Molinopampa, Amazonas, Peru. Their archive charts adventures in the new culture they immersed themselves in whilst representing the USA and providing aid - in between dodging the rainy season.

La Colorada

This Kentucky/Peru couple started off a little unusually - think Anna espying Ivo sprawled on the stairs of a student housing dorm in Bristol, England - but they are loving married life in the mystical country of Peru. Living within a stone's throw of the beach, embracing the fashion of sharing their lives through social media (the joy of expat life) and experiencing the adventurous shenanigans of life as a Kentuckian in Peru, this is a site full of real expat joy.

How To Peru

How To Peru isn't just a Peruvian travel guide for backpackers and other independent travelers, but a treasure trove of often updated practical advice. Want to know 50 things to do in Lima, how to ship a car over or need an insight into the day-to-day machinations of language? This is where to go.

American Chicha

Chicha, translated roughly, is a vibrantly disarrayed cultural foray into the deepest, most delicious verges of Peruvian life and Jason is exploring as many aspects as possible. Sampling everything from worms to attempting the discovery of the best French Fry Potato, this American culinary student is sharing his adventures via the medium of a knife, fork and whisk.

My Slice Of Peru

Moving in 2008 from Tom's native America to his wife's home nation of Peru, this Chiclayo Gringo has seen out enough years to call himself an experienced expat. When not exploring their beautiful home, they run a charity set up especially to provide local aid focused on furthering education in the poorer areas of the Lambayeque Region.

Academic Troll

Anna is a Finnish anthropologist who now lives in Lima with her family. If you’ve never visited Lima before, take a look at her city guide (accessible from the top menu), which will give you a good idea of what to do and where to go while you’re there. Anna travels outside of Lima quite often as well, and writes about her experiences in various cities and towns around the country. Her blog is a must-read if you enjoy good food, fine wine and beautiful scenery.

Life In Peru

Ward and Patricia are a Belgian guy and a Peruvian girl who fell in love in North Carolina and now live with their children in Peru. The blog reads a bit like a novel, with stories woven throughout that detail daily life in Peru, what it’s like to raise children there, and the various sights and cultural experiences that every expat should enjoy during their time in Peru.

Tarapoto Life

A blog that reads like a guidebook, Tarapoto Life recommends things to do to make your experience in Peru as fun-filled as possible. From bar and restaurant recommendations to free concerts to the Mishtu Mikuna gastronomic fair, the blog is filled with useful tips on where to go and what to do. The ‘Expat Life’ section is also worth reading if you’re as yet undecided about whether to make the move - it’s filled with updates on what it’s really like to be an expat in Peru.

A Gringo's Life In Cusco

An American expat who moved to Peru in August 2012 and opened a Bed & Breakfast, Lyle writes about his experiences of expat life as well as giving updates about local news and reviews of things to do. The ‘Cusco - An Overview’ series of posts provide an overview of each of the local archaeological sites - both the well-known ones and those that are a little more off the beaten track. If you want to learn about Cusco’s history, this is a great place to start.
