At Expat Focus, we like to be on the lookout for resources around the web that could help prospective expats adjust to their new countries. Today, we’re taking a look at South Africa and some of the social media accounts you should be following if you’re thinking of moving there.

SA-People - for South Africans in South Africa and Expats
Facebook Page | Twitter | Instagram

Without doubt one of the biggest expat Facebook pages in South Africa, the 200,000+ followers and fans of this bastion are all friendly, helpful and have a brilliant sense of humour. Articles shared are from all walks of life - from serious news stories and thoughts on political actions, to bloggers sharing their reality to incredible videos of Zulu dancing.

Joburg Expat
Facebook Page | Twitter | Instagram

The blog 'Joburg Expat' was brought to life when author Sine (which doesn't rhyme with 'mine') moved from Kansas to Johannesburg in 2010 together with her husband and four children, just in time to witness one of Africa's most glorious events, the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Ever since then she has been sharing her escapades and hard-won wisdom both from the time she lived there, and the realisations she had when they made the decision to leave. Luckily, her store of expat tales hasn't come close to drying up.

Kiwi Expat Community in South Africa
Facebook Page

Authored by the New Zealand High Commission in Pretoria, this friendly Facebook page simply hopes to provide information on social and other important events, as well as acting as a platform for homesick Kiwis to feel a little closer to Aoteoroa. With stories from both countries, the odd rugby update and occasionally shout outs for help from the community this is an interesting page to follow.

South Africa Latest News and Jokes
Facebook Page

Sharing the lighter side of life, the South Africa Latest News and Jokes Facebook Page is all about making the world more fun, one article at a time. They feature pressing news as well, but hedged with amusing snippets of humour and a window onto life in the majestic country.

Expat Cape Town
Facebook Page | Twitter

Sharing expat insights and up-to-date tips on moving to, living and working in Cape Town/South Africa, the authors and contributors of Expat Cape Town are expats who have lived through the unique challenges of immersing themselves in a new culture. Their expat guides share useful tips and insights, preparing new expats for their time in Cape Town and will be an invaluable tool for all who want to settle in more easily and successfully in South Africa.

SA News
Facebook Page

Acting as a gathering tool for news that concerns the inhabitants of this nation, this is a fantastic resource for keeping up to date with national and local events. The authors use Google as a source, ensuring that the most up-to-date announcements are shared to all who need to know what is happening. The 80,000+ fans of this page pay tribute to just how needed this tool is for life in South Africa.

UK & British Ex-pats in South Africa
Facebook Group

The 160 or so community members of this helpful Facebook group not only know where to buy the best tea in South Africa, but have been handling the ropes of expat life for a good while. They share their wisdom, football updates and hard-earned recommendations with each other, and always welcome questions. In this private group, members must be from Great Britain / UK, hold a UK passport and be currently living or planning to live in South Africa soon.

Disco Pants and a Mountain
Facebook Page | Twitter

Hilarious, very honest and insightfully pithy, the author of Disco Pants And A Mountain (the personal blog of writer and returned expat Susan Hayden), is utterly brilliant. If you are looking for a window onto embedded South African culture or a humorous read that often cuts to the quick, this is the blog for you.

SA Expats
Facebook Page

This Facebook page was set up for expatriates from South Africa and local South Africans with expat family members. Featuring articles with a clean, family fun angle and the unique sense of South African humour, this is a lovely page for anyone interested in current events and a touch of brightness on a work day.

We’re always on the lookout for more accounts to feature - if you write about living in South Africa on social media, leave us a link in the comments and we’ll take a look!
