Los Angeles Banks are typically open from 9:00AM- 5:00PM Monday-Friday. Many banks even offer limited hours on Saturdays. Many banks will even allow you to apply and open an account online.
Banks in Los Angeles offer both checking and savings accounts. Savings accounts offer interest rates and are good for putting money aside to save. Checking accounts allow money to automatically be taken out from a bank teller, an ATM, or with use of a debit card. You can also write checks authorizing money to be taken out of your account. With the wide use of debit cards, checks are not as commonly used as in the past. Debit cards are more readily accepted because they allow for quicker confirmation of funds and draft the money directly from your account. Checks typically take several days to draft the money from your bank account.
When looking for a bank, keep in mind that banks pay different interest rates and charge different service fees. Look for banks that lower monthly service fees and offer higher interest rates. It is also important to remember that every time you use a different bank's ATM machine, you will most likely be charged a service fee. To avoid this problem, look for large banks that have ATM's all over the city, especially near where you live and work. If you want to open both a checking and savings account, it may be advantageous to have both accounts in the same bank. This often offers the option of transferring money from one account to the other online.
You may also choose to use credit cards when making a purchase. Credit cards are accepted at most stores and restaurants. They are not connected directly to your checking account. Instead, they are charged to your credit card account. At the end of your credit card's billing cycle, you will receive a bill for the charges made. You will then be required to pay all of your charges for the month in one lump sum, or pay a percentage of the total amount for larger balances.
