At Expat Focus, we like to be on the lookout for resources around the web that could help prospective expats adjust to their new countries. Today, we’re taking a look at New Zealand and some of the blogs that might be useful for expats there.
Arguably the most infamous expat blogger in New Zealand, Liz quit her job and eventually became one of the first official digital nomads in this collection of islands (almost) next to Antarctica. Each post is full of passion, personality, the occasional challenging opinion and jaw dropping travel photography. Some of her most popular posts are about the 23 things she learned on her first month in New Zealand, learning how to talk kiwi and the 5 things no one tells you about moving abroad.
Julie and her family are living the dream. Moving their worldly possessions to the other side of the globe, life in the slow lane has placed smiles on their faces and a spring in their step since 2006. They built their home on a 6 acre plot overlooking forests and have carved out new identities as expats far away from "mother England".
Rhonda seems like she'd be the perfect neighbour. When not jetting about the world travelling with her family, she is a crew member of a women’s yacht racing team, leads a Girl Guiding group and drinks coffee. Albom Adventures charts their experiences as expats on one of the most remote countries in the world (not to mention the sheep population.)
Stoked For Saturday
Living in Wellington for two and a half years, this Canadian couple sold all of their worldly belongings and emigrated to a country they had never seen (bar on the big screen). They fell in love from afar with the adventurous possibilities and the hope that locals were are friendly as they are rumoured to be. Creating a 55 video web series "Living a Kiwi Life" and exploring every inch they could find, Stoked For Saturday is a wonderful tale of expat living.
Sharing everything from the best places to catch Pokemon(Go) in Hamilton, to demystifying hilarious misconceptions about New Zealand, POMS AWAY is a lovely collection of memories and experiences. Trying to answer the cheeky question "Is New Zealand backwards" amongst a myriad of other queries emigrés have, this is a must read for those looking to travel to Aoteoroa.
A Swede Living In New Zealand
Written both in Swedish and a Kiwi-hued English (yes, there is such a derivative), Asa is a Swede living in New Zealand, and sharing her experience of life with a heart divided. With dedicated pages to help those thinking of winging their way to the country where rugby players do war dances and the most often eaten fish are chocolate, this is a blog full of helpful, honest information.
The Josh and Melissa
Sharing their up to the minute life-changing decision to move to Hobbitton - sorry, New Zealand - Josh and Melissa's YouTube Channel/Vlog is a fascinating insight into their brand new expat world. Watching this American couple's delighted discovery of prehistoric New Zealand may just make even more people emigrate there.
The Bike Wife
This American girl, duckling welfare advocate, Paleo cook, weekend explorer, expert hugger and breathtaking photographer is sharing her journey in New Zealand. When not mountain biking through Lord of the Rings scenery, she tells the story of her expat life in one of most intriguing countries in the world.
Catching The Magic
Bringing up their 3 daughters under the shade of New Zealand fern trees felt like the right thing to do for this British couple and with a couple of international moves in between, they have returned to the coffee capital of the world to put down roots. Their OE (Overseas Experience) is shared through the beautiful medium of their personal blog.
Last but certainly not least, Ngaire is seeing New Zealand from the other side - whilst recounting some of the amazing experiences she has had whilst travelling, she has repatriated to her home nation and is settling back into the lifestyle she left. Seeing the Land of the Long White Cloud through new vision has certainly been an interesting expat experience...
