I’m not sure I expected to learn much, nor change much, when I came to live in the USA. I just wanted to have a new experience. Suffice to say that experience has definitely changed me and I have learned a great deal about others, cultures, myself and about life in general.

These are my musings on what I’ve learned during my three years in America as a British expat trailing spouse, and how these things have ultimately changed me.    more ...

Sometimes I wonder how the expat life is being interpreted by, not only my son, but the British kids of families here in Maryland where we live.

The journey for many of them is fleeting – those who are under six will have vague memories of it when they grow up, yet will be made to remember certain events or places as the adults reminisce such things as:
‘You know the one, Harry…… that waterfall in the Shenandoah Valley where you fell in and your swimming trunks fell off.’ Followed by parents roaring with laughter and a confused 14 year old trying to both picture and forget the event that took place eight years ago….    more ...

I realized after my first month here in the USA that I missed my UK marketing and communications team terribly. I missed the banter, the chats, the mulling over particular news items or TV shows from the night before, and I missed having people to talk to.

So I began to really blog. Not just a blogging a bit, but every day.    more ...

When I studied for my degree in Literature and Film &TV I’m not ashamed to admit I was a bit obsessed with America and all that it had to offer on the other side of the pond. I chose to write about British and American TV shows in the 1980s for my dissertation and ended up watching episodes of Dallas back to back and comparing and contrasting them to episodes of Eastenders. Now that was a fun degree!

This is the opening paragraph from that essay: ‘This essay will investigate the genre of soap operas by way of comparing and contrasting class and gender in the American serial Dallas and the British soap opera Eastenders, with specific emphasis on the social function of Eastenders and the dramatic function of Dallas. What will be apparent is that whilst these transatlantic shows have differences contextually, they also used many of the same themes and issues within their narrative structure in order to deal with certain social, economical, political or cultural issues.’    more ...
